My Nan was My Mother

Edith Lily Eva Curson
Known to everyone as Lily

She had 7 children and I am her grandaughter.

I was bought up by my Nan who I called Mum but when I was 13 , I was placed in a local children's home due to her age.

I remember everything about that last week. I had been going to see her in hospital everyday after school and on Friday 13th June 1979 she left us.

I had a great day a school, it had been a nice hot sunny day too. I got home, had my tea and was going to get ready for my visit.

My friend, who had been taking me to the hospital, decided I needed a break so he took me out for the evening and we went for a meal at the Wimpy.

When I got back home, we was having a coffee and just before I said goodnight the phone rang. It was my Mother. She had told me that Nan had gone. I stood there feeling guilty.

Here I was thinking how I had gone out, instead of going to the hospital.

My guardians then called a taxi and my friend & I was taken to the hospital. By the time I got there, My Mother had been sedated. Her Brother and all her children (my Aunts & Uncles) were there too.

I never got to see her but I just watched through my tears how everyone was acting and to my horror, most of the talk was about 'sorting out the funeral' & 'What shall we do with her stuff'. One would say 'Do you want this item to take back with you' or 'do you want that thingamabob'. (So you can probably imagine what the funeral was like.) I'm sorry, but I'm was glad to leave.

When I returned home I went to bed and just cried for the rest of the night.

I still cry today and think how much I miss her.
I remember my life with her and the places we went on our holidays.

Now I am reliving those happy times by visiting the places we went.
I've started at Cornwall, she loved it there. But unfortunately now I do and I can't seem to get to any other destination.

Missed you then as much as I Miss you now Mum.
Wish you were here to advise me as you did in life.
Wish I could talk to you and you could hold me again.
Thank you for bringing me up, you will always be my Mum

Love you forever X
